It is important to note that it’s not always appropriate to have a child learn to manage their anxiety without these items or behaviors. For example, especially for autistic children, anxiety might be related to the associated sensory experience in certain situations, which is overwhelming to them. Certain items, such as noise cancelling headphones, may be essential in these situations. It will not always be clear what is excessive and leading to more long-term anxiety (fix-it) vs. helping a child manage anxiety (coping skill).
