There are many venues in which to present your research findings, both within BCM and at external conferences. Your research mentor is likely to be an excellent source of information regarding conferences and journals within your field of research. You may also refer to the SOAR External Conferences Catalog to find conference opportunities related to your specialty or project type. Additionally, consult the Research Publication Resources at the bottom of this page for open-access publishing support and guidance on where to publish your work. Students are encouraged to visit the Student Resources section of the SOAR webpage for tips on how to prepare an abstract or research presentation.

BCM Medical Student Research Presentation Monthly Sessions

The BCM Medical Student Research Presentation Monthly Sessions, organized by the SOAR office, offer a platform for medical students to showcase their research progress. Each presentation is scheduled for 7 minutes, followed by a 3-minute Q&A session. This recurring event offers students with regular opportunities to present their work and receive constructive feedback from BCM residents, fellows, clinicians, and faculty, who privately evaluate the presentations.

Participating students gain invaluable experience in communicating their research, refining their presentation and Q&A skills, preparing for conferences, enhancing their resumes/CVs, and exploring next steps such as preparing their research for publication. Sign up as a presenter here. Please note that all presentations must be approved by the students’ mentors.

SOAR External Conferences Catalog

A list of external conference opportunities is available, encompassing local, state, regional, national, and international conferences. This searchable resource has been compiled with conference suggestions from individual students and student interest groups. Each entry contains information on the conferences, suggested research or specialty areas, and project type. Check back from time to time, as new conference listings will be added monthly.

Conference websites should be consulted for information on conference locations, abstract submission guidelines, registration costs, and deadlines. Many conferences offer student discounts and travel awards to help reduce the costs of attending. Consult the website of your conference of interest to find out how to apply. Additionally, students may apply for assistance from the SOAR Office by navigating to the SOAR Travel Awards page. Additional information on cost-saving tips for attending conferences can be found there.

Visit the searchable SOAR External Conferences Catalog and filter conference opportunities by research/specialty area or project type.

Research Publication Resources

The Read and Publish model provides medical students with opportunities to publish their research findings in open-access journals at no or reduced cost. By participating, students can retain copyright and increase the visibility of their work, all while contributing to global research accessibility. Learn more about the Guide to Open Access Publishing Support, available through Texas Medical Center Library agreements.

Identifying journal options early in the writing process can help medical students save time and effort when preparing to publish their research. Tools like Web of Science, Browzine, JANE, and others can help streamline the process by recommending journals based on the topic or content of your article.
