Baylor College of Medicine, located in the Texas Medical Center, is recognized nationally as one of the best places in America for underserved students to train as biomedical researchers. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences houses three student development programs:
SMART (Summer Undergraduate Research Training) Program for undergraduate college students nationwide. Underserved students make up 30 percent of the SMART summer undergraduate research program participants (80-100 students each year).
BCM PREP (Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program) Scholars for research-oriented, underserved post-baccalaureates. There are seven underserved students in research-oriented post-baccalaureate programs such as PREP Program at Baylor College of Medicine.
IMSD (Initiative for Maximizing Student Development) for Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. students. The NIH Initiative for Maximizing Student Development grant (1998-2019) to Baylor has enhanced Ph.D. training for underserved students. Underserved Ph.D. and/or M.D./ Ph.D. students have been enrolled in all Ph.D. programs at the College. There is an 85 percent retention rate of underserved students in Ph.D. programs at Baylor. underserved students have been recognized for selected accomplishments and have more than 300 Baylor, national and international awards. All of our underserved Ph.D.s are in science-related careers; 16 already as faculty.
