About the Lab
We consult and collaborate with various investigators to better understand how to prevent chronic disorders including pediatric obesity, gastroparesis, cancer, and bone disease. Our collaborations span multiple study designs including randomized clinical trials, longitudinal, and observational studies.
Our interest in childhood obesity drives us to better understand the association of a child’s micro-environment, parental attitudes and behaviors, cultural influences, and inflammatory markers with unhealthy child growth. We also seek to understand how social and psychological factors influence disparities in child and maternal health outcomes. We conduct methodological research to solve real–life analytical problems in observational and interventional behavioral research.
Our projects include:
- Butterfly Girls Study
- Comparison of Body Composition Measures to Assess Childhood Obesity
- Markers of Inflammation and Stress in Mothers and Infants
- Social and Demographic Determinants of Maternal and Child Health
- Methodological Research
Primary Investigator
Dr. Musaad's research focuses on the environmental, social and molecular determinants of chronic disorders including obesity, diabetes and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center
The Musaad Lab is part of the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center which conducts basic and clinical research that represents the vibrant and diverse scope of childhood nutrition. Studies carried out at the CNRC investigate molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases, human nutrition and metabolism, plant physiology, epidemiology, and community-based health. The CNRC houses laboratories supported by state-of-the-art equipment, room calorimeters, a greenhouse, a metabolic kitchen, multiple observation labs, as well as accommodations for research volunteers.
