Congratulations to Dr. Shixia Huang (PI) and the BRITE program for securing the NIHR25 Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA, NIH and NIGMS), which provides $1,250,000 in funding over five years (2024-2029) for the BRITE teacher’s training program.
About BRITE: BRITE teachers training program provides biotechnology research hands-on training opportunities for middle and high school teachers. The teachers work with scientists side-by-side for three weeks in the Advanced Technology Cores at Baylor College of Medicine and the program engages scientist educators and STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) specialists to help teachers translate real-world research and science experiences into their classroom lessons. The program was extended to provide trainings for high school students.

BRITE Program History
BRITE teacher’s training pilot program was launched in 2022, with support from the Huffington Deptartment of Education, Innovation, and Technology (EIT) at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM.) The program then earned an award of $50,000 grant by the Huffington Foundation through the Department of EIT for its 2023 summer program. The trainings are mainly conducted at the Advanced Technology Cores at Baylor College of Medicine. BRITE 2024 summer Teacher’s Training pilot program was supported by the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine and the Sealy Center for Environmental Health and Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Starting in July 2024, the BRITE teacher training program will be supported by the NIHR25 Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA). This funding will enable the program to train 12-16 middle school teachers annually.
