Texas Children’s Hospital has given the Melvin Spira, M.D. Endowed Chair of Plastic Surgery to Dr. Edward Buchanan, associate professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of Plastic Surgery and director of Cleft Care and the Craniofacial Fellowship Program at Texas Children’s Hospital.
This prestigious professorship honors the legacy of Dr. Melvin Spira who completed his plastic surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine in 1961 and was later appointed by Dr. Michael E. DeBakey to serve as chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals, including Texas Children’s. Dr. Spira was a renowned and beloved specialist and innovator in the field of pediatric plastic surgery, with a particular interest in cleft lip and palate repair, which he did for children all over the world.
Dr. Edward Buchanan treats infants, children and teenagers with a wide variety of plastic surgery related conditions. He specializes in pediatric craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, facial fractures and reconstruction, cranial vault remodeling for craniosynostosis, and midfacial and mandibular distraction. Dr. Buchanan earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina before completing his residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University Medical Center and his Craniofacial/Pediatric Plastics Surgery fellowship training at the Seattle Children's Hospital/Harbor View Medical Center. He is board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Melvin Spira
Melvin Spira, M.D., D.D.S. completed his plastic surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine in 1931. He joined the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and was appointed as chief of plastic surgery by Dr. DeBakey in 1976. He served in that capacity for 19 years.
