Future medical students attend BCM/JAMP Symposium

More than 100 high school seniors from Baylor College of Medicine's magnet health professions' network were guests at The Texas Premedical Leadership Symposium hosted by BCM and the Joint Admission Medical Program. The symposium was held Friday, June 18 at noon at the Onstead Auditorium located at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The JAMP program, which began in 2001 and is funded by the Texas legislature, is geared toward helping intelligent but financially disadvantaged students pave a path to medical school through scholarships, summer stipends, internships and conditionally guaranteed acceptance to a Texas medical school.
Students from DeBakey High School for Health Professions in Houston, The High School for the Health Professions in Mercedes, Moody High School in Corpus Christi and John B. Alexander High School in Laredo will be in attendance.

The symposium was held to help prepare students even further for careers in the medical field through networking and interaction opportunities among the high school students, BCM physicians, current medical students and residents from the South Texas and Houston areas.
Dr. Leroy Chiao, former NASA Astronaut, was the keynote speaker discussing leadership and space exploration.
Dr. Bobby Kapur, assistant professor of medicine and director of the BCM emergency medicine residency program at Ben Taub General Hospital, led a discussion on what students need to know about health care reform.
Other lectures included future options for students in the JAMP program and shared stories from medical students.
