Dr. Ram Mishra, postdoctoral associate in the Interdisciplinary Consortium on Advanced Motion Performance (iCAMP), received the Peter Sheehan Young Innovator Award. His study, presented at the 19th Annual Wound Healing Science and Industry (WHSI2022) Conference in New York, suggests an innovative tele-medicine solution to triage hard to heal diabetic foot ulcers.

Different phenotypes of exhaustion were measured using deep learning and image processing via a tele-medicine-based, 20 second repetitive elbow flexion/extension tests. Results of the study were significantly associated with poor nutrition and poor vascular health and enabled investigators to distinguishing between those with high and low likelihood of limb ambulation. This solution could pave the way to remotely triage those individuals who require visiting multi-disciplinary wound clinics, assisting in reducing limb amputation, particularly among underserved populations and those living in remote areas.
