Dr. Mondal Receives Grant from Mike Hogg Foundation
Nandan K. Mondal, M.Sc., M.Phil, Ph.D., assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Circulatory Support at Baylor College of Medicine, has been awarded the 2024 Medical Research and Education Grant from the Mike Hogg Foundation for his collaborative research titled, “Urine exo-miR Profiling to Assess Kidney Health in Mechanical Circulatory Support.” This award provided financial support of $25,000 to conduct the proposed study over a period of one year.
The Mike Hogg Foundation is dedicated to supporting academic proposals that promote clinical care through medical research, education, and the implementation of new diagnostic or therapeutic techniques. In this research project, Dr. Mondal, along with Carl P. Walther, M.D. from the Department of Medicine, plans to conduct next-generation sequencing to profile microRNA signatures and subsequent validation in urine extracellular vesicles among heart failure patients with durable mechanical circulatory support. This will provide a precise mechanistic diagnosis to identify drug targets and recruit specific cohorts in complex, heterogeneous disease states.
