Dr. Mills to Study Amputation Rate Disparities

Dr. Joseph L. Mills Sr., professor and chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine, and medical director of the Save the Extremity Program at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, has received a Society for Vascular Surgery Foundation Vascular Volunteers in Service to All Pilot Project Grant totaling $52,266 in funding for his project titled, ‘A Patient-Centered Approach to Reduce Diabetes-Related Lower Extremity Amputations among Underrepresented Minorities,’ The study will be conducted at Ben Taub Hospital and aims to address disparities within Harris County. The project is multidisciplinary and also includes Drs. Lee Poythress, associate professor in the Division of Internal Medicine, Gina Hudnall-Evans, assistant professor, Barbara Trautner, professor and director of clinical and health services research in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Ramyar Gilani, associate professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Nader Zamani, PGY-4 categorical general surgery resident, and Nawar Hudefi, Vascular surgery resident, as participating investigators.

Dr. Mills is a board certified vascular surgeon specializing in diabetic foot amputation prevention and limb salvage. Dr. Mills has authored over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, focused on his clinical and research interests in noninvasive diagnosis, vein graft stenosis, intimal hyperplasia and limb-salvage in patients with diabetes mellitus. He has been the principal investigator for over 40 clinical trials, including a number of current investigations. He is co-editor of the prestigious "Rutherford's Vascular Surgery" (7th and 9th editions), the “go-to” textbook for vascular surgery.
