Forensic psychiatrists navigate the intersection of psychiatry and the law. Applying psychiatric expertise cultivated through five or more years of rigorous training, they evaluate the influence of mental health in criminal, civil, and other cases. Forensic psychiatrists are often retained as consultants and expert witnesses for lawyers, judges, corporations, and other agencies who trust their evaluations to help reach just outcomes.
Forensic Psychiatry faculty and fellows at the Menninger Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine offer comprehensive forensic psychiatry consultation services to support both legal and healthcare professionals. Sample consultation services available include:

Additionally, the Department of Psychiatry has subject matter experts across the spectrum of mental health diagnoses who may be available for consultation or subject matter expert testimony. These subject matter experts may be valuable in legal matters to educate involved parties on specific psychiatric diagnoses. Such services are related to but separate from forensic evaluations focused on the specific person or case and instead focus on the diagnosis itself.
Our program's services are appropriate for private, corporate, and court settings. We request that inquiries come from an attorney, employer, or court rather than the client or patient.
