The fellow will gain exposure to the pediatric glaucoma surgery at the Texas Children’s Hospital. The fellow will also participate and is encouraged to attend regular lectures and conferences within the department including Pathology, Oculoplastics/Oncology, Ethics, Fluorescein Angiography, Neuro-ophthalmology, and Practice Management. The fellow may also avail himself or herself of the expertise and excellence present in other areas within the department.

Within the Glaucoma Service, more than 720 glaucoma surgical procedures are performed yearly as well as numerous laser procedures. The fellow is expected to aid in the interpretation of ancillary tests performed in the Glaucoma Service for referring physicians, allowing extensive experience with both visual fields and optic nerve imaging studies.

The fellow is responsible in part for the patient care and data collection for clinical trials being conducted within the service. Opportunities are also provided in basic laboratory and animal research based on the interests, experience and capabilities of the fellow.

The department comprises full-time clinical and research faculty members principally located in the Alkek Eye Center of Baylor College of Medicine. The building also houses the ambulatory surgery center, where most of the surgery is performed. There are 10 dedicated lanes for the Glaucoma Service in addition to a laser suite. The ambulatory surgery center has five operating rooms with a dedicated ophthalmic support staff.

Pediatric ophthalmology service is in the Clinical Care Center, which is the outpatient care center of the Texas Children’s Hospital. The pediatric glaucoma surgeries are performed in the hospital outpatient surgery center at the Clinical Care Center (1.2 mile from the Alkek Eye Center). Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, is located a half-mile from the Alkek Eye Center.
