Professional Statement
Practitioner-scholar with an eclectic, combined 30 year-career in social work and medical academia, and public and non-profit social services organizations in both Colombia and the USA. At BCM, I have a three-fold role. As a clinical social worker and EMDR & MBSR* trained therapist, I provide mental health services, integrated health care, and behavioral health consulting. I use a holistic approach emphasizing the mind-body-community connection and implement diverse therapeutic techniques. As a scholar, I write and implement grants, publish scholarly articles on health-related topics, present at conferences and other venues, and mentor fellows/students. As a trainer, I lead, develop, and implement curricula on mental health and wellbeing topics and train a wide range of audiences, such as physicians, students, mental health and social services professionals, and the general public. As an engaged citizen, I advocate for social and reproductive justice and volunteer for non-profit organizations focused on human rights, immigration, and wellbeing. I am a yoga and mindfulness practitioner and always in awe of the natural world.*EMDR=Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
MBSR=Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
