
Section Highlights
- With over 300 faculty and staff across nine locations, the section delivers comprehensive care through high-volume inpatient and outpatient services, including new initiatives like the San Felipe Clinic and Harris Health’s “Hospital at Home” program.
- Faculty are national leaders in curriculum innovation, including the implementation of Baylor’s new 4-year medical school curriculum and the publication of best-practice frameworks like Understanding by Design® in Medical Teacher.
- GIM educators are deeply involved in shaping future physicians through continuity clinic mentorship, inpatient teaching, and award-winning instruction, with several faculty receiving BCM’s top teaching honors in 2024.
- The section is committed to collaborative scholarship, producing impactful work in care quality, medical education, and social determinants of health, and presenting at major national meetings including SGIM, SHM, and AAMC.
- Innovative quality improvement efforts continue to earn distinction, such as the award-winning colon cancer screening initiative by Drs. Oladunjoye and Valdez and research improving hospital throughput led by Dr. Catherine Daniel.
- Faculty-led events like the Academic Regional GIM Conference and the David J. Hyman Lecture foster regional collaboration and highlight important topics like clinician burnout, workplace resilience, and professional development.

Education
Education is one of the key activities of the section. Clinical supervision of residents and students occurs at the primary clinical locations.
Research
Section members have been recognized nationally for their research/scholarly activity. Research activities in the area of general internal medicine also occur in other closely affiliated sections.
Healthcare
General Internal Medicine is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common adult medical problems, with an emphasis on caring for the whole patient.
