Program Aims

Clinical Excellence Across Diverse Practice Landscapes: Our primary aim is to develop residents into clinically exceptional emergency medicine practitioners who excel across a wide spectrum of practice environments, patient populations, and levels of acuity. Through exposure to a diverse range of cases and hospital settings, residents will hone their clinical skills, diagnostic acumen, and treatment strategies. This comprehensive training will enable them to confidently navigate complex scenarios, ensuring the highest quality of care for all patients, regardless of their background or the challenges posed by their medical conditions.

Community-Centered Care Excellence: We strive to train emergency medicine residents to provide high-quality, culturally sensitive, and patient-centered care to the underserved population in our community. Residents will learn to navigate the unique healthcare challenges faced by this population, emphasizing empathy, effective communication and collaboration with patients, families and community resources.

Health Equity Advocacy and Research: We aim to cultivate a cadre of emergency medicine practitioners who are advocates for health equity. Residents will be empowered to identify and address disparities in care, engage in community outreach initiatives, and contribute to scholarship related to healthcare disparities. This focus on advocacy will drive positive change within the hospital and the community it serves.

Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration and Leadership: Recognizing that effective emergency care requires collaboration among various healthcare disciplines, our program aims to foster teamwork and interdisciplinary skills. Residents will engage in regular interdisciplinary simulations, case discussions, and rotations to develop the leadership qualities needed to coordinate care across specialties, resulting in well-rounded emergency physicians with the ability to lead in complex, real-world healthcare scenarios.

These aims underscore our commitment to training emergency medicine residents who are not only compassionate and community-oriented but also clinically excellent, adaptable, and skilled in delivering outstanding care.

It is my pleasure to introduce the Baylor College of Medicine Emergency Medicine Residency.  We are a three-year, ACGME accredited residency program that was established in 2010. We embrace the diverse lived experiences of our community and strive to provide culturally competent and equitable care for all. Our residents develop clinical excellence with a heart of service for our patients and our community.

Located in Houston, Texas in the Texas Medical Center, we leverage the resources of the world’s largest medical complex to drive resident education and unique opportunities during resident training. Our primary clinical site, Ben Taub General Hospital is a level 1 trauma center, comprehensive stroke center and certified chest pain center. As Houston’s primary public hospital, often called “The People’s Hospital”, Ben Taub provides advanced care regardless of our patient’s social or financial resources. Additionally, our residents train at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, home of the Texas Heart Institute, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, the largest VA hospital in Texas. To ensure a robust pediatric experience, our residents rotate at Texas Children’s Hospital, ranked third in the country amongst pediatric hospitals.

We are highly-responsive, learner centered program that offers a supportive training environment with an emphasis on developing skills for life-long learning Residency is a time of incredible growth as you progress fresh from medical school graduation to become an experienced emergency physician ready to handle anything that comes through the door.

We believe the core of clinical excellence is the ability to provide our patients with the best care possible and to serve as important advocates for our patients.  We also recognize that through self-reflection, innovative education and service to our patients, our residents will continue to grow during residency and beyond.  Through progressive clinical responsibility, diverse learning environments at the bedside and beyond, coupled with personalized feedback from our invested faculty, our residents develop the competencies needed for excellence as bedside clinicians and as leaders in our field.

We recognize that Emergency Medicine can be challenging at times, especially while navigating residency.  We understand that to heal others we must be present as the best version of ourselves and are committed to the well-being and support of our residents. Additionally, we understand that to have longevity in the field there must be an emphasis on figuring out how to prioritize one’s health, well-being and happiness.

Since our initial class of residents, the Baylor College of Medicine Emergency Medicine Residency has recognized the importance of our resident voices. We empower them to make our residency the best version it can be. Resident’s input is incorporated into all major departmental decision making. We value the lived experience of the residents and recognize they are best positioned to ensure a shared vision for the future as we continuously improve with every iteration of the program.

Thank you for considering our program. We hope you will consider joining our residency family and be the leaders, patient advocates and outstanding emergency physicians our patients and community deserve.
