Undergoing a BIA Measurement
The BIA analyzer used in the Bodycomp Lab at the CNRC requires subjects to lie down on a bed with a non-conductive mat. Subjects lie on their backs with their arms away from their sides and their legs slightly separated. All metal objects are removed (jewelry, etc.)
Four electrodes are attached to the subject at the following sites: wrist, hand, ankle, and foot. Wires are then clipped to each electrode. The measurement process takes about one minute, during which three separate counts are taken. The final analysis combines results from the three runs. |

BIA measurements should be taken at least 10 hours after any strenuous activity. Anything that affects hydration (such as alcohol) should be avoided. The subject should lie still during the procedure, and breathing should be normal. Measurements should be performed within 5-10 minutes after the subject lies down, in order to minimize fluid shifts that will occur. |
