Service learning integrates service and academic learning to promote understanding of course content while helping students develop insights regarding the range of services required to deal effectively with complex social issues and problems.
All enrolled students in the PA Program are required to complete a minimum of 12 hours of service learning (SL) throughout their time enrolled in the program. Eight hours of the requirement is fulfilled during the didactic year, with an additional four hours required during the clinical year.
Completion of the SL requirement constitutes part of the grade received for the Cultural Competency I and Cultural Competency II courses within the didactic and clinical phases of the curriculum, respectively. Service Learning is defined as “a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” - National Commission on Service Learning
