Housing
The SMART Program is a residential program, emphasizing the importance of getting to know other participants and sharing ideas and dreams for the future. Housing is assigned by the SMART Program in the Texas Medical Center typically near Baylor College of Medicine. Accepted applicants will be sent additional information regarding housing and registration.
Transportation
The SMART Program does not provide transportation for participants. There are two airports in Houston, Hobby and Intercontinental. Hobby is the closest airport to the Baylor complex. Participants should arrange personal transportation to and from the airport. However, upon your arrival, there are number of mechanisms you can use in order to get to your housing. You can take a taxi, uber or a more reasonably priced shuttle to your housing. During your stay in Houston you can take advantage of Metro, our Houston area bus system.
Baylor is located in the Texas Medical Center. You might want to bring your car for the summer. If you have a car, you will be quite popular. There is parking for SMART program participants, for a fee. Houston has extensive bus transit. A new light rail line connects the Medical Center to some areas of Houston. We are a spread out city and there are great places to take weekend road trips - the beach at Galveston (50 miles), the Hill Country, Austin, San Antonio and Padre Island. Parking details will be provided once arrangements are finalized.
Lifestyle
During your nine-week stay at Baylor College of Medicine, you may purchase monthly access to the Baylor gym. The facilities include a full-size, indoor basketball court, an aerobics and cardiovascular room, and a weight room.
SMART participants have many dining options during their stay; however, we do not offer a meal plan. The SMART program and graduate departments may provide some meals during the week. BCM affiliated students, faculty and SMART participants receive a discount at all Baylor College of Medicine affiliated hospitals.
