Taking care of yourself is a prerequisite to your success. Baylor College of Medicine students have many options to participate in individualized or group wellness programs, activities and events within their school, at the College, in the Texas Medical Center and throughout the city of Houston.
The Office of Student Services works with students to identify needs and either find existing resources to meet these needs or develop new initiatives across seven dimensions of wellness.
"The most surprising thing to me about Baylor College of Medicine has been how healthy the environment is."
Seven Dimensions of Wellness
Emotional/Mental Health
The challenges of maintaining emotional health are well documented by organizations such as the American Association of Medical Colleges, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions. Learn about our Student and House Staff Mental Health Service, as well as the resources available through WellConnect.
Physical
Finding time within your hectic schedule to establish a lifestyle that supports your physical health can be a challenge. Whether you’re looking for a place to exercise, resources for your occupational health, or primary care resources, the Office of Student Services has you covered! Find resources to support you.
Financial
Learning how to live on a budget, understanding how to minimize debt, and counsel on general financial planning are all critical aspects of holistic health and wellness. Maintaining financial wellness throughout graduate/professional school and beyond is essential for all students. Whether you’re a pro at managing your money or are new to personal finance, Baylor College of Medicine provides a variety of services and resources to help you master your financial wellness.
Medical Student Financial Wellness website provides resources and information specific to the needs of students in the M.D. program.
Social
It is not uncommon that, in adjusting to the demands on your time, the social aspects of wellness are the first to fall by the wayside in favor of more time to study, research and lab obligations, or keeping up with the general demands of your program. Explore opportunities to socialize at Baylor.
Intellectual
Intellectual health and wellness are integral parts of holistic wellness for graduate and professional students. While Baylor only recruits the best and brightest, that doesn’t mean our students and trainees never face any academic difficulties. In addition to providing physical study spaces and other resources through the Education Resource Center, the Office of Student Services also houses a variety of resources geared towards time management, study skills and test taking. Explore Academic Excellence resources.
The Office of Student Services maintains comfortable and relaxing lounge spaces available to all students, and works closely with the Office of the Provost and other auxiliary service units to ensure that all facility and environmental needs are met in a timely manner. Our Campus website includes maps of campus, links to Baylor’s award winning recycling program, information on the College’s Emergency Notification System, and much more.
Spiritual
Whether the term “spirituality” means religious practice and observation, or simply connectedness with self and the world around you, spirituality is an important dimension of health and wellness. In addition to the many resources for spiritual expression that can be found throughout Houston, Baylor offers presentations on the intersections between health and spirituality, tours of the sacred sites of Houston, yoga classes, and workshops on the art of mindfulness.
